Weekend planner – Dec 14 to 16
Thursday, December 13th, 2012
Oh, the weather out there has been a wee-bit frightful, but the amount of fun you can have in December is still delightful! This weekend, if you don’t already plan to watch the world’s best ads at the WAG, check out the Crèche Festival in St. Georges, drive through a Winter Wonderland or book a northern lights tour, here are some more fun things to do:
Island of Lights
Open nightly | Portage la Prairie
Drive through the brightest spot in Portage la Prairie and be dazzled by the Island of Lights! Manitoba’s longest running drive through light show runs nightly from 6 to 10 p.m. until Jan 7. As a winner of numerous provincial and national tourism awards, this exciting show is a must see!
Winter Wonderland
Dec 14 to 15 | Manitoba Agricultural Museum, Austin
Enjoy a magical walk or horse-drawn wagon ride through the beautiful pioneer village filled with glistening holiday lights at the museum! Children will have the chance to make holiday ornaments and holiday cards while waiting to see Santa. Plus, an outdoor skating rink, snow slide, snow hill, and jam pail curling will provide hours of fun for the entire family.
Messiah at WSO
Dec 15 | Centennial Concert Hall, Winnipeg
Dec 16 | Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, Brandon
No work in the history of music transmits the urge to sing more than Handel’s Messiah. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra tradition continues, as the special glow of the season comes alive with Handel’s matchless sense of timing and drama, where the music’s memorable path from darkness to light never fails to inspire. Enjoy the show in Winnipeg or Brandon.
Get Amped at Asessippi
Dec 15 | Asessippi Ski Area & Resort, Inglis
The Asessippi ski area is now open for the season! Head out there on Saturday to enter their Get Amped ski and snowboard competition! The competition is open to all ages and abilities, including a pro-division, in a jam session format.
Fred Penner
Dec 15 | The West End Cultural Centre, Winnipeg
Sing-along with Fred Penner at the West End Cultural Centre on Saturday! Fred’s musical career and appeal spans generational divides, so it’s only natural that he performs two shows; an afternoon Kid’s Show at 2 p.m. and a Grownups Pub Style Sing-a-long Show with the keg taps open for those big kids.
Winter open farm day
Dec 15 to 16 | Aurora Farm, St. Norbert
Visit the Aurora Farm to get in some great seasonal shopping, animal cuddling, demos and more! They’ve got great gift baskets, yummy food gifts (complete with recipes), cheese-making kits, and new alpaca yarns. You can also enjoy cinnamon bun making demonstrations (with sampling), a soap carving station, and a scent bar. The barn will also be set up to satisfy your animal cuddling needs and, if it’s warm enough, pony rides!
Art in December
Various locations across Manitoba
Manitoba’s art scene doesn’t slow down for the holiday season! Indulge your senses by checking out one of these exciting exhibits.
Shopping, shopping, shopping!
Various locations across Manitoba
Last week on our Facebook page, we asked “Where’s the best place to find unique Manitoba-made gifts?” and you gave us a huge list of great places to shop this holiday season. The resounding winner was The Forks, of course, but honourable mentions go to Constance Popp, Sew Dandee and Ukrainian Festival boutique in Dauphin.
Enjoy your weekend!
