Happy New Year! We hope you rang in 2013 with happy celebrations and great fun! With a new year, comes opportunity to try something different – embark on an adventure to one of our beautiful parks or lakes, immerse yourself in our fabulous art scene, or enjoy one of our many outdoor winter activities. This weekend, if you don’t already plan to see dinosaurs unearthed, drive through a Winter Wonderland or catch Ed’s Garage, here are some more fun things to do:
First Fridays in the Exchange

Enjoy the warmth of studios and galleries filled with fine art. First Fridays is dedicated to bringing together artists, artist run centres, galleries, businesses and the public for a greater understanding, appreciation and promotion of the arts in the Exchange area. Here’s this month’s guide.
Winter Scenic Walk
Jan 5 | Pine Point Self-guiding Trail, Whiteshell Provincial Park
Join the Park Interpreter on a guided winter walk through the splendid boreal forest. This groomed trail makes for an easy stroll as you trek to the scenic Pine Point Rapids and discover the adaptations that wildlife make to survive a Manitoba winter. A warm-up shelter will await you at the rapids where you can enjoy hot chocolate and s’mores! Be sure to dress warmly for this 5 km hike. Harlem Globetrotters

Your family’s smiles will begin before you even get to the show as the Harlem Globetrotters 2013 “You Write the Rules” World Tour takes kid participation to a whole new level. For the first time ever, fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome. After the game, Globetrotter stars remain on court for autographs and photographs with fans. Soul Skating
Jan 6 | The Forks
The Canopy Skating Rink is transformed into a dance floor on ice. DJ’s Hunnicut & Co-op spin your favourite tunes while you spin around the ice. Runs from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. For more information visit The Forks.
Magical Mystery Munsch
Ends Jan 6 | Prairie Theatre Exchange
Get ready for lots of high-octane energy and loads of laughs as you watch the indelible and charismatic characters of Robert Munsch books come to vibrant life on the stage. Five stories from Canada’s most beloved children’s author – classics like Murmel, Murmel, Murmel, Mud Puddle and Millicent and the Wind and new favourites like ROAR! and Look at Me! – are all presented in larger-than-life, kid-friendly fun.
Ice fishing in Lockport
The ice has formed and the fish are flowing, so grab your rod, tackle box and auger and head out to Lockport to enjoy some world class ice fishing on Lake Winnipeg. To get you in the mood, check out Rick Mercer’s funny ice fishing escapade:
