It's Manitoba Time! Weekend planner for March 1 to 3, 2013.

Our days are lasting longer and the weather isn’t quite as wicked, which must mean that sweet March has arrived! Now is the perfect time to get out of hibernation-mode and straight into enjoying some good Manitoba fun. Here’s our guide to a few of the best things to do this weekend.

The Mark of Zorro at MTYP

Feb 28 to Mar 9 | Manitoba Theatre for Young People
Watch the 20th century’s most notorious hero hit the stage in The Mark of Zorro – an edge-of-your-seat escapade. Lock swords with Zorro as the masked champion ricochets from one sticky situation to another in a world where adventure is the name and justice is the game!

First Fridays in the Exchange

Mar 1 | Exchange District
Enjoy the warmth of studios and galleries filled with fine art. First Fridays is dedicated to bringing together artists, artist run centres, galleries, businesses and the public for a greater understanding, appreciation and promotion of the arts in the Exchange area.

NAfro Dance Productions presents KUDJA

Mar 1 to 3 | Gas Station Arts Centre
Enjoy an evening of percussion, chants and highly energetic African-inspired movement as well as rhythm-driven choreographies. “KUDJA means “coming from…” in Makonde language, and it’s a traditional ceremony to celebrate the end of the initiation ritual.

Gimli Ice Festival

Mar 2 to 3 | Gimli
Embark on a celebration of community at the Gimli Ice Festival! This annual event has fun activities for the whole family, such as: ice fishing for kids, Icelandic frozen fish toss, “Chicken” curling (not real chickens), ice golf, baking contest and auction, poker derby, Winnipeg Sports Car Club racing on the ice, Manitoba Mini Sled Association races. Plus, the Gimli Film Festival will be showing short films outside in the evenings.

Canadian Power Toboggan Championships

Mar 2 to 3 | Beausejour
Ride out to Beasejour to cap off on exciting race season at the 51st annual  Canadian Power Toboggan Championships! Watch racers from all over North America compete for the top spot on Beausejour’s popular half-mile ice oval track, renowned for its speed and safety. Plus, Hugh “The Polar Bear” Rowland from the History Channel’s Ice Road Truckers will be at the event!

Slopestyle 2013

Mar 2 | Asessippi Ski Area & Resort
Head out to Asessippi to enjoy Slopestyle 2013 – the Saskatchewan provincial freestyle finals. While there, enjoy all that Manitoba’s premier ski area has to offer including a snow tubing park and newly upgraded beginner park.

The Penelopiad at MTC

Feb 21 to Mar 9 | Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre
Enjoy a “brilliant tour de force” contemporary twist on a classic myth in Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad at MTC. With her husband gone off to war, Penelope is left to run the kingdom while dealing with a bratty teenager and a raft of aggressive suitors.

Dinosaurs Unearthed

Runs until Apr 8 | Manitoba Museum
You only have a little over a month left to check out Dinosaurs Unearthed at the Manitoba Museum. This interactive exhibit combines the latest scientific research with state of the art, life-sized animatronic dinosaurs that create a unique, immersive experience.

Hudson at the zoo

Open daily | Assiniboine Park Zoo
Say hello to Hudson, the Zoo’s new 15-month old polar bear! Hudson is the first identified inhabitant for the Zoo’s upcoming Journey to Churchill exhibit set to open in 2014. While at the Zoo, check out the new Polar Playground, Arctic Treasures Gift Shop and Tundra Grill.

The art scene in March

Various locations across Manitoba
Spend an afternoon or evening enjoying some of Manitoba’s diverse arts offerings. Here’s a handful of great exhibits you don’t want to miss this month.

Under the Same Blue Sky at Gurevich Fine Art and Journey By 6-7-8  at New Iceland Heritage Museum both premiere this weekend.
