Take the (craft) show on the road

Museum boutiques are a great place to find unique gifts for that hard-to-shop-for person on your list. Another great place to find one-of-a-kind items, from jewellery to home décor, to clothes and toys, is craft sales. This fall, take a literal shopping trip, exploring what artisans and crafters from all over Manitoba have to offer.

Start your journey at Scattered Seeds Christmas Craft Market, October 17-18 at Red River Exhibition Park. Over 170 vendors offer a wide range of products. Check out Milt Bailey, who makes bird baths and other containers using real leaves and cement. Then take a short drive south of the city to Morris, for its annual Craft, Bake and Trade Show, on October 18. Or head west to Brandon’s Big One Arts & Crafts Sale at the Keystone Centre, October 18-19. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Brandon’s Big One features nearly 200 artisans and crafters, including a return this year by the “wreath lady”, whose hot selling willow wreaths are a favorite of many of the 6,500 shoppers.

The following weekend, visit Reston, west of Brandon on Highway #2 for theChristmas in the Country Tradeshow, October 26. Why not purchase some luxurious alpaca fiber socks from Turtle Mountain Ranch. And who said socks are a boring gift?

The Winnipeg Etsy Street Team (W.E.S.T.) brings its annual Handmade and Vintage Sale to St. Boniface, November 8. This is your chance to see in person all the amazing products Winnipeg artisans and crafters are selling on Etsy.com.  Choose from the sweetest collection of stuffed owls from Birdie And Dot for the newest member of your family. Or opt for the Fortune Cookie Clutch from Hoshii Designs – bringing good luck in the new year to your closest friend.

Teulon and Area Farmers Market hosts its Winterfest Craft Sale, featuring over 50 vendors, November 21 and 22. Even a snow storm didn’t stop the 700 shoppers who visited last year’s sale, coming away with a variety of items, that all fall under the Farmers Markets’ motto that vendors must “make it, bake it, or grow it!”
