With Halloween quickly approaching, this might just be the best time to give it a shot. Get into character at the Central Canada Comic Con, or embody a classic Halloween costume at one of our many haunted attractions and Halloween events. Imagine yourself soaring high above the crowd at a daredevil extravaganza, or play witness to a drama set in the wild west. There are endless options. Who will you be? Here’s what’s hot this week…

Characters from all walks of life, planets, and dimensions gather at the C4 Central Canada Comic Con. Fans and hobbyists can browse the artist alley and the exhibitor hall, all before getting the chance to meet special guests such as Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who), Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) and  Tim Rose (Star Wars – Return of the Jedi). Where else can you see Sailor Moon, Batman and Daenerys Targaryen all in one room?

‘Tis the season for fear and fright, and what better way to give yourself the shivers than by getting out to one of Manitoba’s many Halloween haunts. From haunted forests for the adults (Six Pines) to ghostly tours for the kids (Lower Fort Scary), there’s something bone-tinging for everyone this October.

So you want something a little slower paced, with less screeches and screams? There are plenty of activities to do this week with the kiddies to celebrate Halloween.

Halloween at Fort Whyte kicks things off on October 31 with an exciting scavenger hunt and pumpkin carving. The Forks Market Halloween Party is an excellent venue for safe trick or treating, and also has a face painting station and a trick or treat bag decorating workshop. Oak Hammock Marsh will be hosting a Halloween Party & Pumpkin Decorating, inviting all to join on a guided marsh walk and learn the grim story of the wetland. Your last stop in the city will be the Assiniboine Zoo for the Halloween Spooktacular at the Zoo, in honour of Bat Appreciation Month, where your kids will enjoy a colouring corner and a spooky scavenger hunt. For those looking to get outside the city limits, head to La Riviere Kids’ Hallowe’en Fun Day, the Carman Halloween Carnival or the Big Brothers Big Sisters 10th Annual Haunted Forest in Brandon.

The good old hockey game brings the roar to the crowd when the Winnipeg Jets take on the Los Angeles Kings on October 27 and the Chicago Blackhawks on October 29. As always, tickets are limited, so grab what you can before they’re all gobbled up. And there’s plenty of pre- and post-game action at surrounding pubs, clubs and eateries like The PintShark Club, The Met, and Tavern United.

Nothing says fall quite like hay rides, corn mazes and pumpkin patches. Don your boots, scarf and sweater and head out to A Maze in Corn for all of the above, plus a petting zoo, pony rides, exhilarating ziplining and a spooky Haunted Forest. The Scarecrow Forest in Steinbach has just about every farm activity you could think of, from Bales of Fun to Pig Races. Other options include Deer Meadow Farms, Boonstra Farms and Meandher Farms. Might as well make a fun day out of it and declare a Corn Maze Road Trip!
