Festival fun…for FREE!

Spending a sunny summer day enjoying some frolicking good fun is made even better when that fun is free! Here are some festivals around the province that don’t charge an entry fee.

Morden Corn and Apple Festival
August 26-28

Morden Corn and Apple Festival in Manitoba

This festival is on my family’s list this summer not only because my kids love corn, but because I’m guessing free corn tastes even sweeter. Free corn on the cob and apple juice give the festival its name, but the festival also features wholesome entertainment and a relaxing atmosphere with activities that include a parade, midway, along with the second annual Wind Warrior Challenge.

Minnedosa Family Fun Festival
July 8-10

Duckdrop at Minnedosa Fun Fest

This community-wide party takes over Minnedosa, as I discovered last year. A street market highlights local goods, the car show and parade bring in the traffic, the duck drop fundraiser is a splashing good time, and the kids’ activities include a giant bouncer next to the vintage Canadian Pacific railway car.

Plum Fest
August 19-21

Waffles at Plum Fest in Plum Coulee Manitoba

This festival in Plum Coulee promises a weekend of free family fun, with live music, lots of kids’ activities, and a petting zoo. There is also local food including a waffle breakfast and faspa – a traditional Mennonite late afternoon lunch consisting of watermelon and roll kuchen – a tasty biscuit.

Rockin’ on the Red
July 15-17

Rockin' on the Red in Lockport, Manitoba

Head out to the Half Moon Drive In in Lockport for this weekend of free music and family entertainment. There is face painting, dog shows, midway rides, and even hot air balloon rides. Fireworks end the evening with a bang!

Thompson National Aboriginal Day
June 21

National Aboriginal Day in Manitoba

Get set for a day of cultural celebration, including a community barbecue, Grand Entry and pow wow, along with live performances from Indigenous bands. The fun continues with an evening of jigging, square dancing a large community dance.

Movies in the Park
Fridays in August

Movies in Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park

Set up a lawn chair or blanket in front of the Lyric Theatre at Assiniboine Park for a selection of family-friendly and blockbuster movies – like The Good Dinosaur and Jurassic World and Zootopia and Star Wars The Force Awakens. The early feature starts at 7:00, perfect for families with young kids – and those with kids a little older, or those who don’t care about bed times, can stay for the 9:15 pm movie.

Meteor Fest
July 8-10

Meteor Festival in West Hawk Lake, Manitoba

West Hawk Lake is the happy result of a meteor crashing into the granite bedrock, and Meteor Fest is the happy result of a community coming together to celebrate summer! Come for a beach day and enjoy yoga on the beach, a sand sculpting competition, beachside barbecue, and more.
