It has recently become a bit trendy to poke fun at lovers of autumn, but let’s admit it: fall is great, pumpkin spice is great and as soon as the autumnal equinox hits, we’re all walking around like this. I don’t know about you, but when it’s time to say good bye to the sweet days of summer, I’m all about warm comfort food. Luckily, there are plenty of spots to cozy up in and have a delicious bite to eat as the temperature drops and sweaters once again show their itchy face. Here’s where you should eat this fall in Manitoba…
Manitoba’s food scene is heavily influenced by the various groups of people who immigrated here. We love holding onto our culture and let’s face it – food is a big part of that. With a steady 4.3 star rating on Zomato, Bistro Dansk will bring back nostalgic memories for anyone with a Danish or European background. The bistro serves up generous, from scratch portions of traditional favourites such as Morbradbof (Pork tenderloin served with sauteed mushrooms, tomato sauce and pan fried potatoes) and Frikadeller (Danish meat patties made from ground veal and pork served with cabbage and pan fried potatoes).
Anyone who has been to a Bomber game in recent years has likely tried one of the delicious creations of Shawarma Khan. In addition to the kiosk at the stadium, you can find Shawarma Khan at two locations: one in the Exchange District and one on Pembina. As the name suggests, this Middle Eastern eatery specialized in shawarma: a style of meat preparation that involves roasting the meat on a slowly turning vertical spit. You can imagine how tender and flavourful the meat is once it hits your palette. Get it in a pita or on a plate with a chickpea salad – and don’t forget to ask for hot sauce!
Close Company is still somewhat elusive in Winnipeg’s food scene, and while the loyal patrons who settle into the tiny 10-ish-seater may want to keep it that way, we know that goodness must be shared. Chat to the chef while they cook up their food or admire the unique space as you eat alongside fellow guests. Cocktails include the Domingo’s El Diabo (Maestro Dobel tequila, espresso, ancho chile syrup and mint) while the small menu boasts flavourful options such as the Morrocan meatballs and king crab.
Having recently earned national recognition from OpenTable, we have a feeling Cafe Carlo may require a reservation for the next few months. Located in Winnipeg’s own Little Italy, Cafe Carlo cultivates a warm, comfortable atmosphere that has been evolved over the years from the restaurant’s “rummage sale chic” beginnings. The made from scratch menu makes it hard to decide on just one dish – but if I had recommend one, I’d go with the classic Seafood Penne because you can’t go wrong with prawns, scallops and crab.

You won’t want to wait too long to nab your ticket’s for this year’s Poutine Cup, taking place at the historic Fort Gibraltar. Ten restaurants are set to compete over the course of the night to win over the favour of the crowd and the judges. The Poutine Cup is a mouth-watering opportunity to see how the traditional combination of fries, gravy and cheese curds can be interpreted in many new and delicious ways.
Prairie Ink Restaurant & Bakery
Nestled into the lovely McNally Robinson bookstore, Prairie Ink serves up an impressive menu for every meal of the day. The menu is certainly not one you’d expect in a mall, never mind a book store. If you’ve just picked up a bestseller you’re dying to read, crack it open while noshing on smoked salmon crostini or west African peanut soup. There’s just something calming about the space that lends itself to comfort food and good reads. Don’t leave without picking up some tarts to-go: it’s a must!

If you think Ralph’s German Restaurant & Cafe only serves German fare, you’d be wrong. Just a few weeks ago they were serving up beef curry on basmati rice, and while most restaurants should probably stick to just one type of cuisine, Ralph’s pulls it off flawlessly. In my opinion, every small town ought to have a restaurant that serves up warm, home cooked cuisine – and for Winkler, Ralph’s is just that!

Eating by the lakeside in fall? Count me in. The Whiteshell is particularly stunning at this time of year, so why not pair it with some delicious food from Nite Hawk Cafe? This local, family-run gem has been serving the lake community since 1970 and was mentioned in the 2013 Maclean’s Book of Lists as one of 10 great Canadian pit stops recommended by readers. For many, comfort food begins and ends with hearty sandwiches and stacked burgers. Trails North Grill seems to mirror that sentiment. Needless to say, if you find yourself in Warren, Manitoba on the weekend, stop in for DIY Belgian Waffles. We can only imagine the topping choices!
Step into what appears to be a dream kitchen at the Woodfire Deli in Souris, Manitoba. The shop and restaurant were designed to be packed with the tools, recipes, ingredients and of course, aromas, that make up what we all imagine as the perfect kitchen. Decadent desserts, pizzas, sandwiches and salads are made with a twist in the wood oven by the resident baker, with the philosophy of taking a slow cook method to fast food.
