Love local this Valentine’s Day

Forget about roses flown in from Ecuador or chocolates churned out in Switzerland, this Valentine’s Day, treat that special person in your life to a local product that says just how much you love them – and Manitoba.

So smooth

If you think the full bodied flavour of your favourite wine can’t be mixed with the creamy texture of Cornell Creme ice cream, then you’d be wrong. Show your love with a pint of Red Red Wine ice cream, hand crafted from milk and cream from an Anola dairy farm. Double up on dessert with Gourmet Inspirations Dark Chocolate Raspberry Fondue Sauce. Dip it, swirl it, lick it with pretzels, berries and marshmallows.

Mood lighting

Coal and Canary Candles from Manitoba

To set the mood, nothing is more flattering than the soft flicker of candlelight. So why not toast to your love while the soft light and sensuous smell of Coal and Canary’s locally made Champagne Flutes and Birthday Suits candle fills the room.

Love bites

Certain foods have a reputation for increasing one’s feelings of love. See if this is true with the VG Restaurant’s Aphrodisiac Menu, an eight-course meal available Saturday, February 11 and Tuesday, February 14. Start with oysters and pickerel cheeks, followed by pan seared scallop with crispy mushroom ravioli and beef tenderloin with lobster croquettes. End with a dessert of chocolate pâté, raspberry marshmallow, passion fruit curd, and meringue kisses. Add on a night’s stay at the Fairmont Winnipeg to enhance the ambiance of the night.

Sweet nothings

Obviously no Valentine’s is complete without a box of chocolates from one the many amazing chocolatiers in the city like Decadence Chocolates, Chocolatier Constance Popp (check out the chocolate roses) or local institution Morden’s of Winnipeg.

Put a ring on it

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but we’ll take silver and gold too. Pamper your loved one with something sparkly like a modern heart necklace from Hilary Druxman (incidentally February is heart month and sales of this piece go to benefit the Heart & Stroke Foundation).  Keep it cute with an adorable ‘Missing Piece’ ring from Sutton Smithworks or a pulsing heart pendant from Appelt’s Diamonds (the centre stone actually pulses with the wearers heart beat).
