You may not be on par (or even close) with any of the amazing athletes participating in the 2017 Canada Summer Games, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show your stuff in preparation of the big event. If there’s one thing watching amazing athletes does, it’s inspire us all to get off the couch and try something new. Depending on which sport you are looking forward to watching, here are 6 ways to get active, prepared and super pumped for the 2017 Canada Summer Games…
Practice your throwing arm at FortWhyte Alive
Take the A Prairie Legacy: The Bison and its People eco-tour at FortWhyte Alive to practice your throwing arm with a traditional atl atl, a throwing spear which was used during hunts to herd the bison into an enclosure. It’s harder than it looks! The Canadian Signature Experience also includes the Bison Safari, Voyageur Canoe Experience, a tour along FortWhyte’s Storied People’s Trail with stops at the Pioneer Sod House and Tipi Encampment, finishing with wild tea and bannock over the fire.
Similarly (or maybe not so similarly), the Athletics events (which includes javelin) take place on July 31, August 1, 3 and 4 at the University of Manitoba Stadium.
Cycle through a bike tour
Exploring the province on two wheels is the best way to see all the iconic attractions, historic landmarks and get a taste of the coolest neighbourhoods. A Moveable Feast in Winnipeg combines pedaling with eating, while Routes on the Red is a great self-guided cycling tour that winds through Winnipeg’s Residential Riverbanks.
The cycling portion of the 2017 Canada Summer Games takes place on July 30, August 1, 3, 8, 10 and 12 at the Red River Exhibition Park.
Perfect your swing on the green
The greens are already one of the most popular places to be this summer in Manitoba, with avid golfers from all over the province hitting up golf courses since the first mild day of spring. For beginners, Manitoba has a ton of options to venture onto with a (very) large bucket of golf balls. Southwestern Manitoba in particular has 15 incredible golf courses set amidst the gorgeous rolling hills of the region. Can you think of a better way to spend a summer afternoon?
Golf is on at the Canada Summer Games on August 8 to 11 at the Southwood Golf & Country Club.
Spend an evening at the ball game
The Goldeyes 2017 season is well underway, with the stadium filling up as fans sing along with take me out to the ball game, and cheer on our awesome home team. This fun summer activity will surely infuse some passion in you for the good ol’ sport of baseball. The yummy snacks don’t hurt either.
Play in a volleyball tournament
MTS Super-Spike (July 21 and 22) is Western Canada’s biggest beach/outdoor volleyball tournament, set in a festival atmosphere with food trucks, concerts and beer tents. Wrangle together a team to participate in this high-energy summer party, with every dollar raised supporting local charities. This year’s lineup includes Sam Roberts Band, The Lytics and The Nobel Thiefs.

Embark on a paddling excursion
From beginners to seasoned pros, there are endless lakes and waterways in Manitoba that are just a dip of a paddle away.
